Helena—Chuck Hunter announced his candidacy today as a Democrat for House District 79, the east side of Helena. “I am running to make health care more affordable and accessible, to provide long term solutions to funding education, and to use my experience to make state government more effective”, Hunter said in announcing his election bid.

Hunter, 54 years old, is a retired state employee who served 22 years in state government, running a variety of programs including Medicaid, CHIP, Unemployment Insurance, Human Rights and Workers’ Compensation. Hunter now owns and operates several small businesses. “I have first-hand experience with working families struggling with health care bills and retired people trying to make ends meet”, Hunter said, “and with my experience, I have lots of ideas of how to make the government work better for all of us.”

Hunter has lived in Helena since the 70s, has four children educated in Helena’s public schools, and has been active in community organizations. He served on the Board of Directors for both the Myrna Loy and Intermountain Children’s Home. “Helena has been good to me,” said Hunter, “so it’s time I used my experience to help make Montana an even better place. We all have to give back when we have received so much”.

This is Hunter’s first run for public office, for the seat being vacated by Dave Gallik because of term limits. But Hunter is no stranger to the legislature. He has worked in every legislative session since 1987. “I really respect and love the institution of the legislature - - but the raw partisan politics of the last session were a disgrace for Montana,” Hunter stated. “I will do my best to bring back the civility that is essential if we are to solve our problems together”.

Rusty Harper, Hunter’s campaign treasurer, filed Hunter’s first campaign report today, showing he has raised over $17,000 so far for the campaign from 185 contributors. “I can’t think of anyone who could do a better job than Chuck Hunter,” Harper said. “I have worked with him and for him and I know how he made everything work better in every position he has held. If you goal is having the government work better, Chuck Hunter is your man.”
